There is an overarching narrative to the adventure and it's one of just living a life, interacting with people, building bonds, and forging friendships. Obstacles have to be overcome, but doing favors for people and generally being someone they can rely on to perform a task will go a long way towards gaining trust. The sense of community here is very much like Animal Crossing, where you eventually get a sense for the personalities of the townspeople and learn about their lives. In that regard, it goes far beyond Animal Crossing by exploring things like fears, mortality, and wanting to have a legacy to pass onto others. The game is very much an allegory for life in that regard, and its moments of reflection make the player do the same.


Very few fledgling indie games get the overwhelming community support that Stardew Valley has seen. With a fanbase rivaling Undertale 's, the game went from a PC-only release to console release (on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) to Nintendo Switch release, earlier this year. Thankfully, the game's developer Eric Barone and publisher Chucklefish have pushed out a new update with many anticipated fixes and a popular new Nintendo Switch feature: video record

Currently, new farming games called Harvest Moon are still getting released, but by different developers at Natsume, while Marvelous is now continuing the original series as Story of Seaso


In Stardew Valley the player has the opportunity to find a Treasure Chest during fishing expeditions, which granted the player a hefty amount of gold when sold, but apart from these random encounters there wasn’t anything special about treasure hunt

Moreover, with each game, the series kept improving itself with new features, like being able to choose between a female or male protagonist right with the second game of the franchise, Harvest Moon GB on Game Boy. Though ironically, Harvest Moon GB is also one of the very few games in the series that doesn't have a marriage system, possibly because of development constraints. This is probably why instead of systematically letting players choose between a female and male protagonist--like it is always the case now--older Story of Seasons games would get an enhanced version only a few months after their release, with bug fixes, new elements and where players would mandatorily control a female protagon
