Black Myth: Wukong was first seen nearly four years ago with a 13-minute pre-alpha gameplay video, and since then the game has maintained a steady course of popularity throughout development. Created by Chinese developer and publisher Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong is a narrative Soulsike RPG based loosely on a novel called Journey to the West , in which players take the role of a Monkey soldier inspired by Sun Wukong, or the Monkey King. After it was officially unveiled back in 2021, until this recent trailer, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers had somewhat fallen by the wayside, due to the increasing number of Soulslikes being released in quick succession. One such game is Black Myth Wukong , which releases in August. Featuring Soulslike mechanics, similarly fantastical boss fights, and steeped in Ancient Chinese history, Wukong will likely be compared to Wuchang , even though the art styles are quite different. Indeed, Wuchang 's tone and aesthetic seem more similar to the likes of Team Ninja's critically acclaimed Nioh ser


So, while there may not be builds in the traditional sense, players can approach Black Myth: Wukong in different ways based on their spell and Transformation choice. They can also take things a step further by spending skill points on different staff forms (switched using the d-pad) that have their own attack patterns. For the preview, we unlocked the Tower Form , which has a nifty move where Sun Wukong climbs to the top of his staff and stands out of harm’s way before doing a flashy flip and slam move. It seems likely that most players will unlock all of the skills by the game’s end, but those different staff forms seem to do enough to mix up combat and allow for unique approaches to varied enem


Black Myth: Wukong 's main differentiator appears to be the sheer power of its protagonist, the Monkey King, and his unique suite of abilities, including being able to morph into various other forms. This, along with some of the weapon skills that have already been displayed, appears to give Black Myth a unique identity among the other Soulslikes. On the surface, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers appears to have much more in common with Sekiro , which, if executed correctly, shouldn't harm its chances of success at


One of the biggest remaining questions in terms of the game's combat mechanics is whether the Monkey King will have access to weapons other than his staff. The staff itself seems incredibly versatile and is capable of changing its length and move set, depending on which stance the protagonist is in. While this already shows good variety, it would be highly unusual for a Soulslike not to offer any other choice of weapons , and for those who are drawn to the genre for its build variety, this could be a blow. Black Myth: Wukong initially seemed too good to be true. Its beautiful graphics, fluid animations, and fast-paced gameplay were so impressive that a groundswell formed on social media, and the title jumped to the top of many gamers’ most anticipated lists. Of course, those thoughts of the game being just a tech demo lingered, but over time, developer Game Science showed more of Black Myth: Wukong and it became clear the title was very real. Now, having played the game for a few hours, I’m happy to report that, based on this first hands-on, Black Myth: Wukong is one to watch out
